Eero Wi-Fi System review: Eero's improved, but it's still too expensive

The dashboard of the app puts the hub of your home automation at your fingertips by bringing your gadgets and network activity front and center. You can do practically any operation with only a few touches if the navigation is more user-friendly. It is also simpler to find new functions and smart home capabilities thanks to the app. First, download and install an Android emulator software to your Laptop.

You see, in our old apartment, we had a 300 Mbps connection and used a router rented from our internet provider , but we weren’t happy with its performance. My boyfriend does a lot of online gaming with his friends, and the internet often couldn’t keep up, causing him to lag out. Similarly, I was often underwhelmed by our internet speeds when trying to work in my home office. Setup is just as easy as all of the other Wi-Fi mesh systems, using a free Eero app for iOS and Android phones.

LOT OF 3 EERO A010001 1st Generation Home WiFi Router System

Eero didn’t drop my connection once, which is the same level of network reliability I’ve seen from the more costly Nest Wifi and better than I’ve seen from Netgear Orbi. And even with a more modest internet connection, the Eero is still too expensive. Google Wifi, which is very similar in terms of features and performance, costs just $300 (£240 or AU$397). And for that, I just can't find any reason why you should get the Eero instead. In my range trials, with three units, it can cover about 4,000 square feet with a sustained speed between units of 100 Mbps or higher. I could make them cover a larger area, up to 6,000 square feet but the real-world Wi-Fi speed was now reduced to less than 50 Mbps.

As a source of frustration, I wish the Eero team would pay greater attention to such simple solutions that materially impact the customer experience. It might work occasionally, but I don't regret purchasing the whole system. One of the many mistakes is that if you add a device as a profile, or forget to delete it after you have finished using it, it can crash your app every time you attempt to use it. You will have to spend at least 30 minutes calling the company to remove it.

You’re in control with the eero app.

Or, you can use the system in bridge mode to extend your existing Wi-Fi coverage to a wider area. Using bridge mode with a non-Eero router, however, means you can't use any of the Eero's features or settings. (If you have a modem/router combo, we’ll just refer to it as your “modem” for the purposes of this tutorial.) The Eero app guides you through the installation, so feel free to follow along in the app as well. Supports speeds up to 350 Mbps on this mesh wifi system.

Most range extenders are set up under different networks; but with mesh networking, there are no other networks to worry about. While each mesh node essentially acts as its own router, the range extender simply replicates the router’s original signal. Mesh WiFi is faster and more efficient than range extenders in delivering WiFi signals.

Clients automatically move from one unit to another as I walked around without any interruption at all. It also passes my 48-hour stress test, during which it was set to transfer a large amount of data between multiple clients. You can also use a single Eero box as a standalone wireless router.

Not only does the eero come with three units, but it’s endlessly extendable, allowing you to add as many units as you need . Plus, eero is easy to use, has lots of useful features, and is only a little more expensive than the Orbi. For instance, there isn’t much more that the Eero can do that a Google Wifi network cannot, beyond power user features that can end up just costing more money. New, experimental features like band steering might wow a certain user, but we’re not sure that’s worth the inflated price.

The Eero now has a polished mobile app and support Alexa voice commands. The system is expensive , not fast enough for bandwidth-heavy local tasks and has minimal features. Ultimately, Eero stands to be the premiere Wi-Fi mesh system for the technology nut that wants the absolute most control over their network both from a performance and security standpoint.

I’m still working, and he spends a large part of his days gaming or editing videos on our desktop computer. I work from home, so I spend my days on the computer, writing articles and doing research online. A bad internet connection can completely disrupt my workflow, and in our old apartment, there were times I actually had to ask my boyfriend to stop streaming videos because it was slowing down my connection. One of our eero units lives in the living room with Alexa. Like the Netgear Orbi, the Eero system further mitigates these interruptions with two Beacon units connected via a third band of data transfer transmitting at 5.8GHz.

In fact, in our first speed test, where we measure the top wireless transfer rate of a single device from each system at various distances, Eero finished dead last. Wired to a local server, a single Eero device transferred data over Wi-Fi to a laptop 5 feet away at a respectable rate of 488Mbps -- but the speed dropped off a cliff once we were more than 30 feet away. It’s possible that this small deviation on the frequency could provide a slightly less crowded signal on which the router can share its internet connection with the satellites. If you’re familiar with Wi-Fi mesh systems, then the Eero design will be nothing new to you.

The $249 three-piece mesh system is a very good deal – $100 cheaper than the three-piece Nest Wifi system and cheaper than the two-piece Nest Wifi system. With this third device, you’ll be better able to spread a steady Internet connection throughout your home . If you need more coverage, additional satellites cost $99 each. The setup process within the app is the same as the first Eero unit, where it will search for it and then you’ll select a room that it’s in. After that, you’re all set, and you’ll get to the screen where you can set up another Eero unit if you have one. Simply repeat the above steps to set up any further Eero units.

It's an entirely new method of internet access from what you're accustomed to. It is simple to use, and provides all the standard features most users need. Eero 6 Pro was easy to set up and runs for several months without any touch adjustments. Although I wish a browser interface was available, it is not a problem for me.
