Those speeds in the back bathroom were also telling. When I ran my tests using just a single Eero as a router, the average speed back there was about 70Mbps. When I added the satellite, that number jumped to 135Mbps.

Most range extenders are set up under different networks; but with mesh networking, there are no other networks to worry about. Granted, you can do this with regular routers and Wi-Fi extenders , but it comes with a host of caveats. That's not a great look, but keep in mind that Eero's system doesn't feature a dedicated router the way that most other mesh systems do. It's designed for multi-point, mesh internet, and not for single-point, standalone connections. Still, the data suggests that you don't want to put your satellites any more than 30 feet away from the router, or each other.

To test this, we head to the 5,800-square-foot CNET Smart Home. There, we set each system up with routers and satellites in the same fixed locations and then test the signal strength using NetSpot software from dozens of spots throughout the home. The result is a handy heatmap -- yellow is great, green is good enough and blue is bad. At close range , Eero was among the fastest routers I tested in this real-world speed test. Speeds dropped at distance once I started connecting through the satellite, but they held steady and didn't fall by very much, which is indicative of strong mesh performance.

After all my research, I had decided the Netgear Orbi Mesh WiFi System was the way to go, mostly because I was concerned about compatibility with our internet provider. As you might expect, internet providers want you to rent their routers, so there’s limited information available about compatibility of third-party routers. Upon moving, we decided to upgrade our internet speed to a Gigabit connection (high rollers over here!), and after much debate and internet research, we also decided to purchase an eero home WiFi system. That, coupled with the fine control that the app provides, has made for a reliable, admirable performance.
With the right system for your home, you can work, stream, game, and chat—without missing a beat. Please fix the bug that the Eero detail screen always displays "wirelress", even though it is wired. This is a problem that the home screen displays correctly, and it must be fixed. When you first set up your network, it is frustrating and confusing to be presented with inconsistent status. If I hadn't Googled it and found that this problem was an ongoing bug, I wouldn't have been as frustrated and confused. It is impossible to determine the exact status of an issue without Google.
